“42 per cent of people aged 55 and over are inactive compared to 29 per cent of the adult population.”

Sport England

This Active IQ Level 3 Award provides excellent knowledge and skills required to design and adapt programmes to meet the needs of older adults.

According to a report in the Bloomberg on the 28th June 2022, the Office for National Statistics reported that people aged 65 and over now account for almost a fifth of the population – this is a 20% increase since the last census. However, with this increase in life expectancy comes a reduction in the number of years spent in “good health” after the age of 65. Furthermore, the number of people with a long-term condition has risen in the 75 years and older age groups. With sedentary lifestyles and lack of physical activity on the rise, now is the time for fitness professionals to update their skills in designing and adapting exercise programmes to meet the needs of older adults.

  • Do you understand the medical conditions commonly associated with old age and their implications for physical activity?
  • Are you aware of the effects of ageing on the UK population?
  • Should we be encouraging older adults to participate in physical activity?
  • Can you adapt exercise to meet the needs of older adults?
